Magnesium is one of the most important minerals we have. There are many reasons for that. You may know that magnesium is important for bone formation and that severe deficiencies can cause muscle cramps. What may not be so well known is that magnesium is also important for the cardiovascular system.
Magnesium can have a beneficial effect on blood pressure since it helps to relax the muscles in the blood vessel walls, that is one thing, but that is not all. The research reviewed here examined the association between magnesium and the risk of sudden cardiac death (Chiuve SE, et al. 2010).
The study included 88,375 women who were followed for a period of 26 years. The results documented that the risk for sudden cardiac death was significantly lower for the women in the highest quartile compared with those in the lowest quartile of dietary intake and blood levels of magnesium.
The researchers concluded that higher blood concentrations of and dietary intake of magnesium were associated with lower risk for sudden cardiac death, and increased dietary intake of magnesium might lower the risk of sudden cardiac death.
It is better to take magnesium as well as calcium and other minerals in a formula that contains all of the most important minerals, since these minerals are affected by each other. Taking only one mineral may cause depletion of another mineral.
The BMJ formula is a convenient way to get all the important minerals including magnesium in a very bioavailable form. It even contains other important nutrients.
